Betty Jean Parson was born in Tifton and attended elementary and high school in Tift County. Upon graduation, she matriculated at Fort Valley State College in Fort Valley, Georgia in 1952 and earned a degree in Elementary Education with a Minor in Library Science in 1956.
She began her teaching career in Fitzgerald and after three years, she moved home and taught first grade at Wilson Elementary and High School. During that time, she enrolled in the University of Georgia to begin graduate courses in Media Science. She later completed her masterβs degree in Elementary Education and Library Science at Florida A&M University. She transferred to Tift County High School as a Media Specialist and remained
there until her retirement in 1991.
After retirement, Miss Parson served on the Tift County Board of Education for seventeen years.
Her first volunteer experience began with the Hospice Program, after which she volunteered atTift Regional Medical Center in mammography. She volunteered with the Soup Kitchen until the pandemic.
Miss Parson took piano lessons and learned to play quite well. Often, she finds herself playing
old hymns that she heard in church as a child, and they take her back to a time of peace. She
was a highly active member of Beulah Hill Baptist Church for many years. She returned to her
home church (Everette Temple CME) where she is a proud servant.
She enjoys reading and traveling. Miss Parson travels include many places in the United States and a few other countries, namely, Paris, France, Brighton and London, England, San Juan, Puerto Rico, Switzerland, Australia, Germany, and Hawaii. She is continuing to live her best life as a retired educator and a pearl member (sixty-five years) of the Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc. and one of the founding members of the Sigma Alpha Omega Chapter in Tifton, GA. Miss
Parson was also a founding member P.L.I.G.H.T. Inc. of Tifton, GA.
Thank you Miss Parson for your years of service to Tift County Schools!
